When did this actually happen? Sunday, January 10, 2016

When my mom visited in January for a week to celebrate my new room (I am in a new room!), we went to the zoo for a (rainy) day. We stumbled upon the Penguin Parade: the penguins take a walk through the zoo every day (when it is colder than 10°) to greet the other animals. This parade is absolutely hilarious.

We also found a capybara and an anteater.

When did this actually happen? Sunday, November 22, 2015

The second day that L. was visiting was more of a relaxed day. As it still was very cold and wet outside, we mainly stayed inside and watched Disney movies (best thing to do on a rainy day apart from reading!).

However, as this was also L.’s last day in Zürich we did a tiny bit of sight seeing: we went to the Focus Terra museum and my office (same building) and looked upon Zürich from the Polyterrasse: you can be sure of a nice view there!

 photo DSCN3361_zpsujkokopc.jpg
There was an ice-skating rink(?) on the Polyterrasse! So much fun and happiness!

 photo DSCN3365_zpsfuwgcf8s.jpg
Very happy with the view!

To conclude the day, we had nice burgers at Holy Cow! A flattering picture is guaranteed.. Also, when we were waiting for L.’s train, we had Starbucks coffee in one of the shops near the main station. It is the best shop ever! Since then, I’ve been there twice more! It’s very cosy.

When did this actually happen? Saturday, November 21, 2015

One of my Utrecht friends, L., visited me for a weekend in November. The weather was not very good (of course, the weather had been great the weeks before. This always happens), but luckily for us there were enough indoor things to be done.

One of the things I was really excited about was visiting the Landesmuseum about the history of Switzerland. This museum was HUGE. We spent 2.5 hours there and were completely exhausted by absorbing all the information. It is not a very interactive, fun museum, unfortunately. It is more a look here is another armour of a different time, although I bet you can’t spot the difference-museum. Still, I’m glad I visited it once know. We had fun. Of course!

Very shocking!

After the museum we went to the indoor Christmas market at Zürich main station. It was very warm and there were nice stalls. I like Christmas markets :) I’ll definitely visit this one next year as well. Maybe multiple times, because they had all kinds of tempting food that I didn’t try this time…

When did this actually happen? November 2015

Sinterklaas is a children’s feast in the Netherlands. I love Sinterklaas. As I couldn’t celebrate it in the Netherlands this year (and couldn’t expect any presents in my shoe), I decided that I would introduce my office mates to the phenomenon of Sinterklaas.

First thing that went wrong was that none of my office mates had brought a spare shoe to the office on Friday. The idea was that they would set out their shoe on Friday evening every week (until Sinterklaas was gone from the Netherlands again) and then (hopefully) find something in it on Monday. Luckily, R. had his running shoes with him and C. quickly made a shoe with some staples and paper. L. however didn’t know what to do. So, C. and I (both Dutch) decided to give him the classic colouring picture of a clog, which you can then cut out and fold into a shoe. L. took this very seriously and spent a good 20 minutes on colouring in his shoe :)

Finished!

Empty shoes on Friday evening (from left to right: shoe of L., C., me, R.). Will Sinterklaas stop by in Switzerland with some candy?

 photo DSCN3330_zpsqqcnrjh8.jpg
Yes he did! And he made poems for everyone as well!

 photo DSCN3376_zpsbcwthqlj.jpg
More candy in the shoes on a different day!

After Sinterklaas left on December 6, he actually left me with a lot of chocolate letters for everyone in my office and my whole research group. Now everyone loves Sinterklaas!

When did this actually happen? Sunday, November 8, 2015

Some of you may know that my research mainly revolves around earthquakes. As it so happens, there is an earthquake simulator ETH. In November (when I was already working at ETH for over 3 months) I still hadn’t visited the earthquake simulator. One of my office mates L. had the same issue (and he already started in February!). Thus, it was time for us to visit it!

However, you can only visit it during a guided tour of the museum in German. I actually understood most of the guided tour (*yay*), but L. not so much. Oh well.

When we finally arrived in the earthquake simulator (which is decorated as a typical living room), we were very excited!

L. is very excited!

It was a lot of fun, even though the earthquake simulator just felt as if you were sitting in a train and changing tracks.

It's been a long time since I posted anything on this blog and this has multiple reasons:
1. As it turns out, doing a PhD is quite busy and during my evenings and weekends I don't want to have another obligation of updating my blog. I just want to cuddle up in bed and watch netflix or youtube or read a good book :)
2. I've done a lot of nice things here and I still have a lot of pictures and stories that I'd like to share, but moving abroad, alone, isn't as rosy as I'd thought, so the hyper-enthousiastic me just isn't there all the time. Especially not after I've done a nice thing and I am alone in my room again. Writing a blog post in that mood is.. wel.. not fun.

Anyways, with the start of 2016 there is a lot that I am excited about and there are a lot of cool things in the pipeline. I hope I can find the motivation for blogging :p

Today was at least a nice an happy day. In fact, this whole week has been great, because I feel that I am going in the right direction towards a PhD again. Good things.

Today, one of our office mates R. wasn't there, and because it was Friday afternoon, we all got a bit silly. So, C., L. and me decided to make it look as if someone reversed our white board. We taped the festoon(?) at the bottom (to defy gravity), reversed all the pens (again, gravity is no match for us!), and I wrote some equations (that are particularly relevant to the absent R.) upside down on the blackboard. I am actually quite proud of how my writing turned out to be! I love the end result. A good way to start the weekend!

So today, I went for a little walk in downtown Zürich. Apparently, when it is Autumn, the Swiss crave the following hearty snack: heisse marroni (grilled chestnuts) as there are little stands selling them on every busy street corner. I felt it would be wrong to not fully integrate myself in the Swiss way of living and begrudge myself this treat.

So, here I am with my first ever heisse marroni!
 photo DSCN3176_zpsmiz67i8a.jpg
Note that they are sold in paper bags which are actually two paper bags fastened to each other: one for the fresh chestnuts and one for the leftover shells. Amazing!

A close-up of one of the chestnuts:

I'm craving for more now..

There was also something fun going on in the city:

And then, because the autumn is so, so beautiful in Zürich, I went for a little stroll in Irchel Park. I'll just show some pictures now of beautifully coloured trees :p

I really like the contrast here of the really light coloured tree in front of the dark conifer.

Here I really like the white bark of the birch tree among all the coloured trees :)

And that was that! I should do this more often!

Very suddenly there was a storm on an otherwise sunny day, which resulted in the following view from our office:

As E. is a big fan of zoos as well, we visited the Zürich zoo together during her stay. On this particular day, the lions and chameleons were very much into posing for my camera.

Also, because we are both a little bit crazy (and just because it is supercool!) we went camel riding. Oh Yeah.

Here is E. enjoying a brief ride on a camel:

And there I am again!

During the rest of E.s stay, we did other nice things (of which I couldn't take any pictures), which are worth mentioning here as well. We went to Donnie Darko in an arthouse cinema (because it is one of my favourite movies). It was actually a very cosy (gezellige!) cinema. I will definitely return there at some point, when they show other nice classics on the big screen. We also went for dinner and karaoke with some of my colleagues which was outright hilarious. I really liked it :) On the last day of her stay, we went swimming in the lake (because it was again hot!) and managed to evade the Street Parade (= thousands/millions of crazy people entering Zürich under the pretence of 'enjoying the music'). It was a lovely visit!
